LOCK, BUT NO LOOK

2016

'Lock, But No Look' (H120 x W200 x D5 cm) is a minimalist hard-edged painting made from canvas and enamel paint. Its image represents a prominent piece of furniture within the SOTA compound, a set of lockers, located at the school’s entrance where students pass it daily.

The work's aim was to visually emphasise the object’s formal design elements by simplifying it to its familiar shape and colour pattern. This acts as a way of monumentalising the commonly overlooked object that had a peculiar presence in the school, therefore having a strange resonation within the lives of its residents.

It hopes to offer a fresh perspective to the residents of the school compound to pay a closer attention to their immediate environment and appreciate how such objects may form a sentimental memory of their everyday, through the simple bypassing of a colourful furniture.
