THE BEAUTY IN EMPTINESS

2017

'The Beauty in Emptiness' (H110 x W220 x D2 cm) is a minimalist wall relief sculpture made from 156 pieces of vacuum-formed acrylic, finished with coats of lacquer spray paint. Its configuration replicates the original colour palette of the table-benches from the SOTA canteen from an aerial perspective in their exact formation when last observed.

The work draws attention to the benches’ sporadic arrangement, a dispersal of colours that though used regularly by the school community, is rarely ever observed from its macro-perspective. The view of the canteen's beautiful arrangement can only be seen in the rare occasion it is unoccupied and empty, usually at the end of the day when it is no longer busy, where most students and teachers would have gone home.

As a result, the work hopes to allow residents of the canteen space a chance to observe the its design and arrangement as a work of art on its own, to meditate upon the peaceful emptiness of the space when it is not functionally occupied, but simply seen as it is without the distraction or the noise of the day to day busy-ness.
